OneLook Dictionary Search

12:04 am - Jason G. - Technology

The OneLook Dictionary Search is one of the cooler things that I’ve stumbled upon in a while…  ever try to think of that word but can’t come up with it?  Go to OneLook and type in the description — and presto!  It should find the word…

This website reminds me very vaguely of the OneAcross website that will help you solve your crossword puzzles…

Icon Spacing

5:08 pm - Jason G. - Technology

I just ran into this little known tweak…  If you want the icons on your desktop super-tight, but still have them aligned to a grid, you can change both the vertical and horizontal spacing of the icons.  Right click on your desktop –> properties, Appearance tab –> Advanced –> select Icon Spacing in the drop down box.

One 30″ center panel flanked by two 20″ panels rotated to landscape mode…  for an effective 4960×1600 resolution.  Only $3,999…  and then you have to have 2 or 3 video cards, but dammit, that’s so worth it!

Also check out the 8-screen “command centers” or the Arena Displays:

Easy Productivity Gains

7:50 am - Jason G. - Technology

Many people skimp on the wrong things… here is my list of must-have items that are worth the extra cost, and since the cost is dollars and not time, I consider them low-hanging fruit.

  • 9-cell battery for laptop (or whatever longer-charge battery is available)
  • Extra power adapters around your office or house
  • Wireless network – either Wifi or cell based
  • Re-chargable wireless mouse (I recommend the Logitech MX 1000 Laser)
  • Docking station (if you have more than 1 peripheral device)
  • A big, uncluttered desk

If you’re a big traveller, I recommend getting multiple batteries and a multi-battery charger. Also, don’t forget to pack the charger and power adapters in your luggage rather than lugging it around in your laptop bag.

Airline Bans Dell, Apple Laptops

7:07 am - Jason G. - Humor, Technology

Virgin Atlantic Bans Dell, Apple Laptops:

Virgin is the third airline to make such restrictions on the recently-exploding laptops, following fellow international carriers Korean Air air and Qantas. Citing the incident of an exploding IBM at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) today, it wouldn’t be surprising if more airlines adapt similar policies. Until new thin-lithium technologies make exploding batteries a thing of the past, jetsetters might have to secede their laptop rights in favor of general safety.

Hydrogen Technology Applications

7:18 am - Jason G. - Technology

How would you like to replace your oxy-acetelene torch with one that burns water (in the form of gas called HHO gas)?

Check out Hydrogen Technology Applications. Their aparent breakthrough is a more sophisticated way to separate the hydrogen and oxygen with electrolysis that uses less energy. They also are working on a HHO powered automobiles or hybrid gas/HHO cars.

Wow… p2p put to good use!

Governments seeking inexpensive technology to warn of tsunamis may be interested in a free application that monitors vibrations in the hard disks of computers in an effort to detect undersea earthquakes that cause tsunamis.

C64 Use as an Indicator of Mental Illness

…The kidnapper “relied exclusively on a Commodore 64 computer — a model popular in the 1980s but now considered an antique.

Lang told reporters the outmoded computer would complicate investigators’ efforts to transfer files for closer examination later, saying it would be difficult “to transmit the data to a modern computer without loss.”

-CNN

It’s sad when we don’t remember how to load cartridges and retrieve the data on them…
