Countdown: 10!

11:50 pm - Jason G. - Commentary

It’s only 10 minutes now until the new year is upon us, and I’m looking forward to 2007 in a lot of different ways.  To kick off the celebration, count down with me to the new year…

New Year Resolutions from Ze Frank

I’m going to treat my body better…
Like… switching to skim milk… on one of the six coffees I drink in a day.
Or… walking farther to a less convenient deli… where I buy cigarettes…

Nifong’d – the next Punk’d?

11:47 am - Jason G. - Commentary

From the Houston Chronicle:

We can celebrate the addition of a new verb to our American lexicon — “to Nifong.” …Now we can “Nifong” someone when we want to trump up criminal charges based on flimsy evidence allegedly for political purposes. In short, when we want to screw up someone’s life.

The Carolinas

6:45 am - Jason G. - Commentary

Think of North and South Carolina as the hicks?

If North Carolina and South Carolina were a separate country, it would have the 12th largest economy in the world, with over $397 billion in gross domestic product. This would place it just below Australia in terms of GDP.

New Word: Blogorrhea

7:04 am - Jason G. - Commentary

I think I just coined a new word… Blogorrhea.

Most people who studied hard for the SATs know the word logorrheaThe definition: “incessant or compulsive talkativeness; wearisome volubility.”

In the blogosphere, I find that there are quite a few people who have logorrhea of the blog, or to be precise, blogorrhea. Not to be confused with splogs, blogorrhea occurs with real people who just have trouble turning off the nozzle with their blog postings…

I feel quite witty with that one… Aren’t words fun?

Why understanding economics is hard

11:32 pm - Jason G. - Commentary

I just read a good article on how inter-personal relationships fall into four categories:

Communal sharing is how you treat your immediate family: All for one and one for all. Or as Marx put it: From each according to ability, to each according to need.

Equality matching, by contrast, means we all take turns. From kindergarten to the town meeting, it’s all about fair shares, reciprocity, doing your part.

Authority ranking is how tribes function, not to mention armies, corporations and governments. Know your place, obey orders, and hail to the chief.

Market pricing, of course, is the basis of economics. It’s what we do whenever we weigh costs and benefits, trade up (or down), save or invest.

Bill Gates 2016?

7:57 am - Jason G. - Uncategorized

Scott Adams, in his Dilbert Blog compares Atheists to gays, Muslims, and the rising class of non-Christian segments influencing politics in the US.

Bill Gates for president in a few years?  I’d actually vote for him.  Of course, his politics might be a little tougher to guess than his religious leanings — Gates is pro-death tax, which would put him in the Democratic column, but he’s also pro-business which would put him with the Republicans…
